Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Sunday 26 Oct 2014 to Tuesday 4 Nov 2014:

Showery and very windy across northern areas on Sunday and Monday, with a risk of severe gales for a time. Somewhat less windy further to the south, though with increasing amounts of cloud. Into the midweek period, a north-south split looks most probable, with windy and often unsettled conditions continuing in the north and somewhat quieter, drier weather in the south. Temperatures will generally be near normal, although feeling quite cold in the strong winds. Towards the end of October and into early November, the broad north-south split looks set to continue, with northern areas remaining changeable and at times unsettled. Further south, there are hints that pressure may start to rise, increasing the potential for more prolonged drier periods, but with a greater risk of overnight frost and fog.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 5 Nov 2014 to Wednesday 19 Nov 2014:

The main signal is for a continuation of a north-south split during the first half of November. During this period, the generally westerly flow is likely to bring spells of wet and windy weather, interspersed with drier intervals. These should mostly affect northern and some western areas, but perhaps reaching other areas as well at times. However southern and some eastern areas will probably see more in the way of the drier and settled conditions increasing the likelihood of seeing some sunshine, but also the risk of frost, mist and fog overnight, the latter of which could be slow to clear. Daytime temperatures are likely to be near or a little above normal, although feeling cooler during any wet and windy spells.

Preston information

Preston is located 220 miles north-west of London, approximately 27 miles north-west of Manchester and about 15 miles east of the coastal town of Blackpool.

The city lies mainly to the north of the River Ribble, while to the north of the settlement itself is the Forest of Bowland area of outstanding natural beauty.

While there is a lot of evidence of archaeology from the surrounding area from Roman and pre Roman times, the settlement was first recorded in the Domesday book (1086) as “Prestune”. It was granted a charter to be a market town in 1179 by King Henry II.

The city was the meeting point of opposing armies in 1648 during the English Civil War) and in 1715 during the Jacobite rebellion.

Textiles have been produced in Preston since the middle of the 13th century, when locally produced wool was woven in people’s houses. The industry grew and developed, particularly as part of the “cotton trade” into the main local employer until entering its period of major decline in the 20th century
