Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Sunday 26 Oct 2014 to Tuesday 4 Nov 2014:

Showery and very windy across northern areas on Sunday and Monday, with a risk of severe gales for a time. Somewhat less windy further to the south, though with increasing amounts of cloud. Into the midweek period, a north-south split looks most probable, with windy and often unsettled conditions continuing in the north and somewhat quieter, drier weather in the south. Temperatures will generally be near normal, although feeling quite cold in the strong winds. Towards the end of October and into early November, the broad north-south split looks set to continue, with northern areas remaining changeable and at times unsettled. Further south, there are hints that pressure may start to rise, increasing the potential for more prolonged drier periods, but with a greater risk of overnight frost and fog.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 5 Nov 2014 to Wednesday 19 Nov 2014:

The main signal is for a continuation of a north-south split during the first half of November. During this period, the generally westerly flow is likely to bring spells of wet and windy weather, interspersed with drier intervals. These should mostly affect northern and some western areas, but perhaps reaching other areas as well at times. However southern and some eastern areas will probably see more in the way of the drier and settled conditions increasing the likelihood of seeing some sunshine, but also the risk of frost, mist and fog overnight, the latter of which could be slow to clear. Daytime temperatures are likely to be near or a little above normal, although feeling cooler during any wet and windy spells.

Newport information

Newport is a city in south east Wales 138 miles west of London and 12 miles east of Cardiff, located astride the River Usk and just inland from the Bristol Channel.

The city is largely low-lying, with low hills and in the areas of the south and east containing an area of reclaimed marshland.

Rich local archaeological evidence suggests the area has been settled since the Stone Age. The Celtic tribe, the Silures, occupied the area before the Roman Invasion and built hillforts overlooking the River Usk.

Newport itself developed from the early Roman settlement of Caerleon, which is a short distance upstream from the current city centre and which was built to defend the river crossing.

Newport was fortified by the Normans between 1066 and 1086 and gained its first charter in 1314. It was first recorded as a settlement as “Novo Burgus” (or new town) in 1126.

It has always been a trading port and was the centre for the export of Welsh Coal from the eastern valleys, especially after the opening of the Monmouthshire Canal in 1800, until the 1850s when Cardiff eclipsed it for this trade.

Until the end of the 20th century the city was a centre for iron and steel production, which is now much reduced in capacity.
