Paris information

As the capital city of France, Paris is one of the most important cities in the world. With a population of around 2.3million people, it attracts people from all over the world.

Previously known as Lutetia, Paris was invaded by Julius Caesar n 52BC. It was under Hugh Capet’s successors in around 987 that Paris was first declared as the capital of France. The people of Paris are often thought of as spirited and rebellious, thanks to the rebellion in 1355 under the leadership of Marcel, in which they declared themselves and independent commune. Since the revolution and two World Wars, Paris has rebuilt itself several times. Today it is thought of as a city of culture and style and attracts millions of visitors every year.

Paris is one of the most accessible cities in the world. As a major hub in the European rail network, it is possible to reach London in just over two hours whilst high speed services also connect to Brussels, Amsterdam and Cologne. The city is also served extensively by air, with three international airports. Travel throughout the city is made easy by an extensive and reliable Metro system.

There are many attractions in Paris that people flock to see, the most popular being the Eiffel tower, The Louvre, Notre Dame and the Champs-Elysees. If sightseeing is your goal there are various guided trips and walks around the city run by the Parisian tourist board. The city is also renowned for its food, especially its patisseries, and can offer gourmet dishes in its beautiful restaurants of a little slice of heaven in its back street cafes.

Fashion and Paris are thought to go hand in hand and rightly so, with some of the world’s most famous designers based there. Whether its haute couture and luxury or a simple boutique Paris has everything in one city. If you’re lucky enough to visit during fashion week you might spot some famous names too.

The city is also the centre of France’s sporting scene, with the Stade de France in nearby Saint-Denis hosting the 1998 World Cup Final, as well as most French football and rugby union internationals.
