Regional forecast for South West England

Today:

It's a dull and grey start to the day with some low cloud and hill fog. Remaining cloudy through this afternoon but it should stay dry. Feeling less cold than recent days with a gentle south-westerly breeze. Maximum Temperature 12 °C.

Tonight:

Remaining largely dry and cloudy through this evening and overnight. Some clear spells may develop along the north coast, but it will remain frost free. Minimum Temperature 11 °C.

Wednesday:

Some brighter breaks will develop through Wednesday and it should stay dry until the evening. Feeling mild with a strengthening south-westerly breeze. Maximum Temperature 13 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Changeable with some spells of rain particularly through Thursday, however for many it will remain dry with some brighter interludes. Feeling mild and frost free.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
