Regional forecast for South West England

Today:

After a largely cloudy start, it will be a dry day with increasing warm sunny spells for most. However, murky conditions with patches of coastal fog may linger along some coasts . Maximum Temperature 22 °C.

Tonight:

Clear spells will develop overnight and it will stay dry, however mist and fog may persist for a time along southern coasts. A very mild night across the board. Minimum Temperature 9 °C.

Thursday:

Another dry and warm day, with any coastal fog clearing soon after dawn. Skies will be partly cloudy in the east, but it will be largely sunny in the west. Maximum Temperature 23 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Dry, sunny and very warm on Friday. However, an increasing risk of heavy, thundery showers spreading slowly in from the west from Saturday morning onwards. with fresher weather following.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
