Regional forecast for South West England

Today:

Perhaps some thundery downpours at first in the east. A damp start for some elsewhere, but gradually turning brighter across the region with some sunny spells possible later in the afternoon. Otherwise, feeling much cooler than of late. Maximum Temperature 23 °C.

Tonight:

Clear spells for some overnight, particularly at first. Overall, a cooler night than last night, although the skies will tend to cloud over towards dawn. Minimum Temperature 13 °C.

Friday:

Dry for most on Friday, although rather cloudy at first. Some sunshine developing for a time later, but the skies tending to cloud over from the north later on. Maximum Temperature 20 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Breezy on Saturday with some showers likely. Meanwhile, drier and brighter on Sunday. Most likely becoming cloudy from the west on Monday, with patchy rain possible later.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
