Regional forecast for London & South East England

Today:

Murky and rather cold, with extensive low cloud, mist and fog, locally freezing fog. Given light winds, these conditions may persist in many areas throughout the day, with only limited brighter intervals developing as temperatures languish in single figures. Maximum Temperature 10 °C.

Tonight:

Mist and fog should reform widely to give another murky night, although it will be much milder than of late, with temperatures reaching double figures in places. Minimum Temperature 5 °C.

Wednesday:

Mild but grey, however the developing breeze should progressively lift mist and fog, eventually developing some breaks to perhaps give some late bright or sunny intervals, mainly in the south. Maximum Temperature 12 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Rather mild, with frost not expected and daytime temperatures into double figures. It will be rather breezy throughout however, with some sunny spells but also some rain.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
