This Evening and Tonight:

Dry and bright early evening across Edinburgh, west Lothian and Galloway; however rain quickly spreading across the Borders will reach all parts after dark. Rain, heavy in places overnight. Freshening northeast winds become strong on coasts. Minimum Temperature 10 °C.

Thursday:

Dull, wet and windy. Rain heavy at times, driven along by fresh North or Northeast winds, near gale force North sea coasts, feeling cool. Rain generally lighter later in day. Maximum Temperature 14 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Becoming drier and brighter on Friday. A band of rain arrives on Saturday, clearing later in the day to scattered showers these continuing into Sunday. Breezy and feeling cool.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
