Today:

After a chilly start with patchy mist and fog, mainly dry and bright with good sunny spells, and light winds. Cloudier conditions and a few heavy showers are possible at times, particularly along the Galloway coast and the Borders hills. Maximum Temperature 14 °C.

Tonight:

Showers becoming very isolated overnight, with long clear spells developing. This will give a cold night, with some sheltered spots seeing a frost, and some patchy mist and fog. Minimum Temperature 0 °C.

Sunday:

Sunday starting chilly with a patchy frost, and mist and fog in places, this soon burning off to give a dry and sunny day. Winds freshening later in the west. Maximum Temperature 15 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Monday will be dry and bright, but with freshening winds. Cloudier with some patchy rain on Tuesday, this dying out by Wednesday with mainly dry conditions developing.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
