Regional forecast for Yorkshire & Humber

Today:

Cloudy and grey with light winds. Rain during the morning will become lighter and patchier during the afternoon, with some dry intervals possible. Rather mild in the west, but feeling cold in the east. Extensive hill fog over the Pennines. Maximum Temperature 7 °C.

Tonight:

Becoming dry by late evening but remaining cloudy overnight with hill fog persisting. Outbreaks of rain will spread into northern areas towards the end of the night. Minimum Temperature 3 °C.

Tuesday:

Cloudy, with outbreaks of rain in the north spreading to all areas during the morning, then gradually becoming dry from the north during the afternoon. Light winds throughout the day. Maximum Temperature 8 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Mild and mostly cloudy, with light winds. Mainly dry on Wednesday with some brighter spells possible, but with patchy light rain on Thursday and Friday.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
