Regional forecast for North East England

Today:

A cloudy day for most with any brightness confined to the east. Extensive fog over the Pennines where there will be long periods of drizzly rain. This rain will extend eastwards at times with most parts seeing some rain. Maximum Temperature 13 °C.

Tonight:

Cloudy with rain and hill fog at first. However, before midnight drier clearer conditions will move into the area from the northwest. Light winds may allow fog patches to form. Minimum Temperature 4 °C.

Saturday:

Less mild, bright at times and mostly dry. Cloud may increase in the south where there may be some late light rain. Maximum Temperature 10 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Mostly dry with clear or sunny spells on Sunday. Cloudier on Monday and Tuesday perhaps with a little rain. Mild. Breezy at times. Hill fog over the Pennines.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
