Regional forecast for Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian & Borders

This Evening and Tonight:

A wet and windy evening with some heavy bursts of rain in Dumfries and Galloway and Southern Borders but lighter around Edinburgh. Locally strong southerly winds. Turning dry overnight with some clear spells developing and winds easing. Minimum Temperature 9 °C.

Thursday:

A mostly dry day with some good sunny spells especially in the east where it will be quite warm. A few showers developing later mainly across Galloway. Maximum Temperature 21 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Rain or showers on Friday with winds strengthening later in the day. Blustery showers and strong northwest winds Saturday, but drier and less windy later. Further rain later Sunday.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
