Today:

Dry and bright start then clouding over with patchy light rain later this morning, dying out early afternoon. Then drier and little brighter, especially Edinburgh, east Lothian and eastern Borders where it will be warmer. Southwesterly winds strengthening later today. Maximum Temperature 20 °C.

Tonight:

A band of persistent rain will move away from the southern Borders early tonight. Then drier and clearer with a few showers later, mainly over Lothians. Windy with southwesterly gales. Minimum Temperature 8 °C.

Thursday:

Very windy morning with southwesterly gales, severe over high ground and bridges. Winds veering northwest and easing during afternoon. Otherwise sunny spells with blustery showers, most frequent over west Lothian. Maximum Temperature 15 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Some sunshine and scattered showers on Friday and Saturday. Turning cooler with winds becoming much lighter. Cold night Saturday night then dry on Sunday with sunny spells.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
