Regional forecast for Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian & Borders

Today:

A cloudy day, and after a dry start in the east, outbreaks of rain over Dumfries and Galloway will extend northeast to remaining areas through the afternoon. A cooler day, with moderate easterly winds. Maximum Temperature 15 °C.

Tonight:

Cloudy with further outbreaks of rain this evening, perhaps the odd heavier burst. The rain turning light and patchy again overnight. Minimum Temperature 11 °C.

Tuesday:

Patchy rain clearing for a time and brightening. Rain returning in the afternoon before brightening up to sunshine and the odd shower in the evening, when becoming windy. Warmer. Maximum Temperature 18 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Wednesday and Thursday will be mainly dry and bright with some sunshine. Then cloudier on Friday with some outbreaks of rain.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
