This Evening and Tonight:

Cloudy with rain reaching Western Isles by midnight, extending to most parts later tonight. Rain mostly light but some heavier outbreaks over the West Highlands. Easter Ross and Black Isle perhaps staying dry. Southerly gales along West Coast. Minimum Temperature 3 °C.

Tuesday:

Cloudy with overnight rain soon clearing away. Then dry and becoming brighter with a little sunshine breaking through. A few showers may follow to Outer Hebrides. Strong southerly winds. Maximum Temperature 9 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

A rather cloudy and windy few days with rain at times. Rain mostly light and affecting Western Isles and West Highlands. Strong southerly winds, gales West Coast, easing on Friday.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
