Regional forecast for London & South East England

Today:

Any patchy rain affecting the Hampshire coast and Isle of Wight at first, soon clearing. Cloudy with strong coastal winds, and breezy inland, but becoming sunnier from the east through the afternoon. Maximum Temperature 13 °C.

Tonight:

It will remain dry with long clear spells overnight, and becoming quite chilly inland. A steady easterly breeze persisting inland, but strong at times along the coast. Minimum Temperature 4 °C.

Saturday:

Dry with long sunny spells and remaining dry. Feeling pleasantly warm in sheltered inland sunshine, but tempered by a stiff northeasterly breeze. Cooler around coasts with strong and gusty winds. Maximum Temperature 15 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Mostly dry, bright on Sunday but probably turning cloudier on Monday, with the odd spot of drizzle. Tuesday bright and rather warm, perhaps some showers later in the west.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
