If the cirrostratus of CH5 continues to invade the sky so that its continuous part extends more than 45 degrees above the horizon, without covering the whole sky, the coding becomes CH =6. The cirrostratus generally grows denser as a whole as it progresses, often still preceeded by cirrus as described under CH5.

These photographs were taken 30 minutes apart and show CH5 (left) developing into CH6 (right). In the earlier picture contrails can be seen crossing the sky. In the later photograph the contrails have become obscured by the thickening cirrostratus. Small cumulus clouds can be seen in both photographs.
