The sky corresponding to CH 8 is characterised by the presence of a veil of cirrostratus which is not (or no longer) invading the sky progressively and which does not completely cover it. The photograph at top right was taken one and a half hours after the one on the left. The edge of the veil may be clear-cut or frayed.
The code figure CH =8 is also used when cirrostratus occurs in patches whether they increase in amount or not (bottom photograph).
Cirrus and cirrocumulus may also be present, but should not predominate over the cirrostratus.
