Areas of research in the Met Office

Met Office research and development covers a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines and applications.

Several of these are focused on advancing our ability to represent aspects of atmospheric behaviour within the Met Office Unified Model; others are focused on components of the weather, ocean and climate predictions systems; while others are concerned with presenting these predictions in terms of the impacts on specific customers.

Weather science

Weather science Weather Science provides the forecasting capabilities that are used for routine operational short to medium range forecasting of the weather, the oceans and their impacts.

Climate science

Climate science Climate Science provides the science capabilities to meet the requirements of a number of government and business customers.

Foundation science

Foundation science Foundation Science provides the underpinning science and model development critical to both weather and climate prediction.
