African climate is monitored using ground-based and satellite observations.
Knowledge of the current state of the climate is extremely important, as it allows characterisation of climate conditions, including extreme events such as floods or droughts. In addition, it enables assessment of the performance of weather and climate models. Observations are collected both on the ground and through remote sensing. Rainfall is a key variable for Africa given its importance for agriculture and water resources, and the CSRP is producing several rainfall analyses using existing publicly available data sets.
