The UK Regional Specialized Met Centre (RSMC) is operated from
the Met Office headquarters in Exeter. RSMC Exeter and RSMC Toulouse
have joint responsibility for Environmental Emergency Response
requirements in World Meteorological Organization (WMO) regions
VI and I which covers Africa and Europe.
In the event of a nuclear accident a National Met Service within
our area of responsibility or International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA) may request services from the RSMC. Once this request is
received we initiate a run of the NAME dispersion model using
default values and distribute the output to the originator of
the request. We also inform the other RSMC, WMO and IAEA that
this request has been received. When the event is confirmed by
IAEA we will distribute the products by fax to all other National
Met Services within Africa and Europe and liase with Toulouse
over the joint statement. The joint statement is guidance for
meteorologists and other specialists in interpreting the model
output and is issued only after agreement has been reached between
RSMCs.
The dispersion model output consists of five charts. One 3D trajectory
chart one total deposition chart and three dosage charts covering
the 72 hour forecast.
Complete details on the service can be obtained from the Environmental
Emergency Response pages of the WMO web site.
