Introduction

The underlying surface type can have a dramatic effect on the air column, especially within the boundary layer. Therefore, it is essential that a numerical model of the atmosphere has an accurate specification of the surface of the earth. In the Unified Model, these data are stored in what are known as ancillary files. These are files external to the model which are used to supply data fields to the model which may either be an external analysis or a climatology. More details on ancillary files are given in a December 2000 NWP Gazette article.
