The Numerical Modelling section provides the interface between scientific model developers and operational forecast production.
Numerical Modelling manages the configuration of the Unified Model code; new developments from other groups are assessed, optimised and lodged for future releases. Optimal configurations are provided to produce the operational forecasts, which are constantly verified to provide feedback to model developers. Systematic errors are removed by post-processing systems to provide automated forecasts to customers.
Driving land surface models with high-resolution meteorological data provides analyses and forecasts of surface and subsurface hydrological quantities such as soil moisture, snowmelt, evaporation, runoff and river flow.
Rapid update, high resolution, very short range precipitation forecasts are generated by blending extrapolated observations with a recent, 4km resolution forecast from the Unified Model.
