Unified Model Collaboration
The numerical modelling system developed and used at the Met Office, known as the Unified Model (UM), is available for research and operational use to external users under tailored licence agreements. Collaborations with the Unified Model are possible through research and operational licence agreements. These collaborations aim to:
- build operational, research and academic relationships with centres of excellence to develop the capability of the Unified Model
- ultimately develop a joint Unified Model programme to deliver mutual benefit to the Met Office, its collaborators and their customers
Operational users
Operational users have a collaboration agreement with the Met Office, which includes an operational and research licence, and may include an agreed programme of research and development work, aimed at waiving the standard annual licence fee. Collaboration agreements have been concluded with the following organisations:
- Australian Bureau of Meteorology
- Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)
- Norwegian Meteorological Institute
- South African Weather Service
- National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NZ)
- Korea Meteorological Administration
- Ministry of Earth Sciences (India)

Research users
The Unified Model is available for more general research by submitting an abstract describing the research to be undertaken. For further details of research licence agreements, please contact the external collaboration manager, via the customer centre.

Flexible Configuration Management software
The Flexible Configuration Management system (FCM) is open-source software used by Met Office users and external users of the Unified Model.
