In fulfilling its public task the Met Office has a broad remit to act in the public’s best interest, and the requirement to protect life and property is at the centre of what we do.

The Public Weather Service provides a coherent range of basic weather information and weather-related warnings that enable the UK public to make informed decisions in their day-to-day activities. Such information is ‘free at the point of use’.

National Severe Weather Warning Service

These warnings are issued to enable UK citizens to make informed decisions that help protect their life, welfare and property in the event of severe weather.

Mountain area forecasts

The weather on higher ground in the UK can often be very different to lower-lying areas. With this in mind, the Met Office produces forecasts for the main areas of higher ground around the UK.

National Meteorological Library and Archive

The National Meteorological Library and Archive, which are open to the public, hold one of the most comprehensive collections on meteorology anywhere in the world. It is vital for maintaining the public memory of the weather, storing meteorological records and facilitating learning.
