Weather is one of the greatest impacts on aviation. With increasingly demanding timetables it is essential that airline personnel have the skill to interpret meteorological information, optimise operations and safety, and make smarter decisions.
We offer a range of meteorological training specifically designed for airline personnel. All training can be given either at the Met Office College in Exeter, or at a site convenient to you. Training includes a tour of our state-of-the-art headquarters in Exeter.
Our courses cover the necessary theory, but they are essentially practical courses based on specialist and business requirements for long- and short-haul airlines. We can also develop courses to meet your specific weather-training needs.

One-day course
Critical to safe and efficient operations, this course teaches the essentials required to make informed decisions relating to winter conditions — a must for anyone involved in de-icing operations.
One-day course
The ability to interpret and anticipate weather conditions is essential for safe flying and this course is designed for professional pilots and is focused on global meteorology for airline operations. Consolidating and building on Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) meteorology, this course blends theoretical weather with practical exercises and case studies to give the confidence to anticipate meteorological threats outside the pilot’s control.
One-day course
This course broadens and enhances operations officers’ knowledge of aviation weather and is designed to give an understanding of how weather affects airline operating procedures.
Responding to the importance of the effect of weather on operations, the Joint Aviation Requirement of Commercial Air Transportation (JAR-OPS) states that: if an operator employs Flight Operations Officers in conjunction with a method of Operational Control as defined in JAR-OPS 1.195, training should be based on the relevant parts of ICAO Doc 7192 D3.
Three-day course
Building on a basic meteorological knowledge, this three-day course provides flight operations personnel and flight dispatchers with the knowledge to make effective operational decisions based on the weather.
Five-day course
This advanced course is designed for senior flight operations personnel and flight dispatchers. As a five-day course it covers in detail all topics recommended in ICAO Doc 7192 and is recommended for senior decision makers who already have an understanding of meteorology.
The course is tailored to your airline’s specific operations, with the ability to adapt the content to meet your individual requirements. It is delivered by our meteorological experts and aviation specialists with practical exercises specific to your operations.
“All areas are useful and relevant to aviation. The content is essential to anybody involved in aviation operations.”
UKOMA delegate Flight Planning Met. course, September 2005
One-day course
Flight Planning Met. is designed to broaden and enhance the flight planner’s knowledge of aviation weather in relation to flight planning and safety. The course is aimed at those involved in short- and long-haul flight planning and encompasses topics such as aviation hazards and the interpretation of significant-weather charts.
These courses are run on demand at the Met Office College in Exeter or at a location to suit an individual planner’s needs, and prices are on application.
