Weather decision-making for Pilots (One day)

Weather decision-making for Pilots will bring together knowledge in aviation meteorology theory and interpretation skills with Meteorological Threat and Error Management (TEM) to help you become a safe and proficient route flyer.

TEM is an overarching safety concept regarding aviation operations and human performance and is increasingly important for General Aviation. This course will focus on meteorological threats and discuss how to successfully manage them, facilitating safe and efficient flight, be it VFR or IFR, through improved ‘weather decision-making’.

Led by experienced pilots and leading aviation forecasters, this course blends theoretical knowledge with practical exercises to give the confidence to anticipate meteorological threats which are outside the pilot's control. Case studies and exercises will take you through steps, in both planning and flight phase, to recognise and recover from these threats helping to prevent subsequent error and ‘undesired aircraft states’.

The cost of this one-day course is just £145 + VAT.

Note: This course is aimed at experienced pilots and can be regarded as an advanced module of the Met. for Aviators course. Not suitable for those pilots trying to obtain their PPL.

“…content thought provoking, challenging and useful. Has given me many ideas to test on next flights… Clear explanations with good practical examples from experienced trainers.”

Jon Parlour 9 October 2008 course

“Great practical examples — open discussion.”

Tom White, 9 October 2008 course

Met. for Gliders (One day)

We are currently looking to develop a one-day course for the gliding community. The course will be aimed at glider, hang-glider and paraglider pilots who already have an understanding of meteorology, but who would like to broaden their knowledge of aviation weather specific to gliding.

Once the course has been developed details will appear here on the web site, including the syllabus and any scheduled course dates.

These courses will be run at the Met Office College in Exeter — please contact us at met4aviators@metoffice.gov.uk for more information or to register your interest in attending.
