Using numerical weather prediction (NWP) products
Who is it for?
This workshop course is aimed at trained and experienced forecasters. This course will also benefit those who conduct research as to the best NWP products to use in different meteorological conditions.
You should be familiar with satellite and radar interpretation and diagnostics for atmospheric development before attending this course.
What is the aim of the course?
The course is designed to help experienced forecasters and researchers make the best use of Met Office numerical weather prediction (NWP) products.
What will students learn?
The course will build skills and knowledge that enable the student
to:
- Combine Met Office NWP forecasts, central guidance and their own
knowledge and experience to produce an improved forecast.
- Demonstrate a range of techniques to verify NWP.
- Analyse and identify subsequent errors in the forecast products.
- Make allowances for model characteristics when using NWP products.
What does the course cover?
Following an introduction to the forecasting process, the main models
in the Operational Suite at the Met Office are investigated, including
recent changes, followed by a practical.
The course then covers local forecasting products and a case study, followed by field modification and finally model verification, using a practical session.
Towards the end of the course there is a section on the use of ensembles as an introduction to the concept of medium-range forecasting in the Met Office Operations Centre.
What is the course duration?
The Using NWP Products Course is a three-day residential course at
the Met Office College.
