Wave-model interpretation course
Who is it for?
Current forecasters, researchers or users of wave-model products who need an improved understanding of how numerical wave models produce their forecasts and output products.
What is the aim of the course?
To enable forecasters and others to use operational wave-model products effectively in the preparation of forecast products.
What will students learn?
Using their improved knowledge of wave models and their associated products students will be able to:
- Describe wave generation in terms of wind/wave relationships and atmospheric stability.
- Demonstrate wind and swell wave decay in both deep and shallow waters and shoreline modification.
- Explain how an NWP wave-model forecast is created.
- Describe the limitations of forecast products and discuss how added value may be given by the forecaster.
What does the course cover?
This course will cover a mixture of practical examples (from a marine production centre) and theory lectures on waves and the science behind the wave models used by the Met Office. There is also an introduction to the concept of risk and probability in a marine forecasting environment.
What is the course duration?
The Wave Model Interpretation course is a two-day residential course at the Met Office College.
If appropriate facilities are available, this course could also be adapted and provided by Met Office College instructors at your organisation.
