Hydrological tools and services

The Met Office has developed a number of specialist tools and services for the water industry - giving information in real time for operational requirements or for historic analysis.

Gridded data sets
Daily rainfall data for all parts of the UK at 5 km resolution, dating back to 1958.

MORECS
A long-standing and highly successful service providing reliable UK-wide assessment of general soil moisture status at daily, 40 km resolution.

SWIM
The Met Office's specially designed Severe Weather Impact Model that estimates likely impacts of a range of severe weather events - particularly useful for broad-scale flooding impact assessment.

Flooded streetStorm analysis
A specialist service provided on request to assess the rarity and severity of any heavy rainfall event in the UK, used extensively in DG5 analyses.

Nimrod
A nowcasting system using satellite, radar and NWP model data to provide short-period forecasts up to six hours ahead.

Gandolf
The best available very short-range forecast of rainfall intensity at 2 km resolution, drawing on techniques developed for Nimrod, a specialised thunderstorm model, and a project diagnosing convection.
