Winter daytime average maximum temperatures
in the Balearic Islands are significantly lower than the Canaries,
peaking at about 15 °C (59 °F), with about 5 hours
of sunshine per day and some 22 dry days each month on average.
North Africa is usually warm in winter, but not exclusively
so. Marrakech is a favourite spot for holidaymakers at this
time of the year, with average daily maxima of 19 °C (66
°F), 7 hours of sunshine, and about 20-24 dry days each
month.
The Balearic temperatures begin to warm respectably during
the spring months, peaking at about 22 °C (72 °F) in
May. By then, there are about 10 hours of sunshine on average
per day, and also 25 dry days. Despite settled warm daytime
weather, North African nights can be surprisingly cool, even
in May. Coastal regions have a fairly constant daytime maximum
temperature of about 22 °C (72 °F), but inland, the
value reaches a hot 29 °C (84 °F) by the end of May.
Sunshine figures are similar to those of the Balearics, but
there should be up to 29 dry days each month.
The peak summer season in the Balearics sees average daily
maximum temperatures up to a very warm 29 °C (85 °F)
with a respectable average of 11 hours of sunshine. The summer
months are essentially dry, with up to 30 dry days. Morocco
is extremely hot in mid-summer, Marrakech experiencing an average
daily maximum temperature of a searing 38 °C (100 °F)
in July. However, on the Atlantic coast, sea breezes keep the
temperatures down to a more acceptable 27 °C (81 °F).
The North African summer is virtually totally dry, and up to
11 hours of sunshine can be expected.
Autumnal sea temperatures are still comfortably high for swimming
in both areas, and so with daily average maximum temperatures
remaining at about 27 °C (81 °F) in September and early
October, the area is an ideal spot for a late holiday. However,
these temperatures will have fallen back to 18 °C (66 °F)
in the Balearics by November, but remain several degrees higher
in North Africa. The months have now become rather wetter, with
about 22 dry days. Sunshine hours have reduced to about 5 by
November in the Balearics, but 7-8 hours in North Africa.
