UK Outlook for Thursday 16 Oct 2008 to Saturday 25 Oct 2008:

All forecast models indicate a broadly westerly flow throughout, bringing cloud, rain, and strong winds. This gives moderate to high confidence in the general pattern, but makes attempting any day to day detail difficult. After a decent start in southeastern parts, the first few days are likely to become fairly unsettled and windy across all parts, rain or showers and strong to gale force northwesterly winds in the north extending southeastwards. This unsettled type will continue for northern and northwestern Britain particularly, but with a hint that southern and southeastern Britain sees a return to somewhat drier and less windy conditions during the second half of the period. Temperatures, typically near normal at first in the south and east, will tend towards normal or a little below normal everywhere.

Seasonal forecasting:

Seasonal forecasting is a developing area of meteorology and, although these forecasts are not as accurate as our short-term forecasts, they do demonstrate some skill in predicting what may happen for a season (a three-month period) ahead.

The forecasts provide an estimation of broad trends in temperature and rainfall and will normally be expressed in probabilistic terms, with the more likely outcome highlighted. Information contained in these forecasts can allow business to plan ahead for weather that is forecast to be different from normal.
