UK Outlook for Thursday 26 Nov 2009 to Saturday 5 Dec 2009:

The general weather pattern is not expected to change much during this period with low pressure often dominating. Day to day detail remains uncertain but it is expected to remain very unsettled with further showers or longer periods of rain. Often windy with a risk of gales or severe gales at times, especially in coastal areas exposed to the south or west. Some short-lived quieter periods are also likely. After the current mild conditions, temperature levels are expected to be generally near the seasonal average, often feeling cold in the strong winds. Showers may also turn wintry over the high ground of Scotland and perhaps other northern areas later. Overnight frosts becoming more widespread in the clearer spells inland.

Seasonal forecasting:

Seasonal forecasting is a developing area of meteorology and, although these forecasts are not as accurate as our short-term forecasts, they do demonstrate some skill in predicting what may happen for a season (a three-month period) ahead.

The forecasts provide an estimation of broad trends in temperature and rainfall and will normally be expressed in probabilistic terms, with the more likely outcome highlighted. Information contained in these forecasts can allow business to plan ahead for weather that is forecast to be different from normal.
