CRISPP (Coastal Resilience and Improving Services for Potato Production in Kenya)

CRISPP was led jointly by the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD), the Met Office and the Global Climate Adaptation Partnership (GPAC) Kenya.

In Kenya’s coastal region the project worked with county administrations, boundary organisations and end-users to establish locally-specific weather and climate information products to mitigate the impacts of, and grasp the opportunities presented by, the climate in this area. It also made improvements to the way that KMD produces its marine forecasts to develop new ways of working for the delivery of impact-based forecasts.

For Kenya’s potato sector, the second most important food crop in the country, improving its resilience to floods, droughts and the hazards of a changing climate is vital for its expansion and the employment of almost 2.8 million people. Through co-production methodologies, the project brought together weather and climate information producers with potato growers and processors to design a series of new services to provide the potato sector with reliable, relevant information to aid them in adapting their businesses to weather and climate threats.

The improved provision delivered through this project benefitted Kenya’s poverty reduction strategies and helped the most vulnerable by increasing the ability of households and businesses to improve their livelihood planning, and protect their assets from weather-related hazards.
