Met Office Science Camps

Our Science Camps are a unique opportunity for Year 7 students, or equivalent aged young people, to camp out at one of the UK's premier science and engineering organisations.

About our Science Camps

We aim to engage and enthuse students with a series of interactive sessions throughout a Friday evening and Saturday morning. The camps involve numerous demonstrations and hands-on activities led by Met Office staff around the HQ building in Exeter. The activities cover a wide range of topics about how we understand, measure and forecast the weather and climate.

The students and supervisors will have dinner with us and camp overnight in Met Office Science Camp tents in our conference rooms. After breakfast, the groups participate in a morning filled with activities, including a chance to try presenting the weather. On Saturday lunchtime they will hopefully leave informed, inspired and a little bit tired!

Watch the video below to see an example of just one of the activities that the students may try:

Who are the camps aimed at?

Our camps are aimed at 11-13 year olds with enthusiasm for Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths.

We welcome several groups of young people from a mix of schools, home educator groups and other non-educational groups such as Scouts and Guides to each event with at least one teacher or responsible adult attending for every six student participants.

How much do the camps cost?

These events are provided by the Met Office free of charge. We just ask for enthusiasm and feedback to improve the event for future years.

(Please note that a refundable deposit of £10 per child is required to secure your place. All transport arrangements to and from the Met Office HQ in Exeter will need to be made, and paid for, by participating groups).

When do the camps take place?

Our Science Camps typically run throughout the spring and summer terms.

How to register

We take group bookings from schools or other organisations, rather than individual campers. If you are a parent or student looking to get involved then please get in touch with a teacher at your school or your group leader and ask them to contact us. To join our Education Outreach mailing list, so that you get to hear when you can apply to take part in next year’s Science Camps, please click here.

Feedback from our previous camps

"Really impressed with the whole thing - a lot of information, clearly explained in a short space of time. Very good."

"Brilliant experience. Jam packed full of activities. Very hands on and interactive. Very interesting!"

"I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to you for this trip. [My child] has come back buzzing from it and has found it very rewarding. She's starting to consider meteorology as a career, she's never really known what she'd like to do in the future so to see her excited about something like this has been great. Thanks again!."
