Keeping your baby cosy on winter nights

Winter is well and truly here and it’s certainly chilly outside! Lots of us have had our first glimpse of snow this year and for some little ones it’ll be the first time they’ve ever experienced it. Once they’ve had their fun building snowmen and it’s time for bed, how can you make sure they’re sleeping in the right bedding? Our friends at the Gro Company have some good advice.

There is no doubt that if your child is kept at the right temperature, it can have a positive effect on the quality and safety of their sleep.

Check the temperature of your child's bedroom

Firstly, think about the room that your child is sleeping in. The recommended room temperature for a baby is 16-20 degrees C [61-68 degrees F]. This temperature can feel a little bit chilly, but Lullaby Trust research has shown that it’s the safest and most comfortable temperature for baby to sleep at. Using a room thermometer is important to monitor the room temperature and make sure it stays at a constant level.

Have a relaxing, warm bath

A great way to wind down and warm up before bedtime is to have a bath. Having a bath is not only a great signal that it’s almost bedtime but research has shown that a warm bath helps towards a good night’s sleep. It’s best to have your little one tucked up in bed within half an hour after coming out of the bath- any longer than that and they often get a ‘second wind’ and can get over tired and fractious.

What bedding is most appropriate for babies and toddlers?

Once you know the temperature of the room, you can decide what bedding will be best for your little one to sleep in. Baby sleep bags have become incredibly popular amongst parents in the UK, as they keep your child cosy and replace the need for sheets and blankets, which can be easily kicked off. Baby Sleep Bags come in a range of different tog values, so you can keep your baby at a comfortable temperature in any season. Grobags come with a helpful tog rating to help you choose which one is suitable for your room temperature.

Here in the UK the tog that can be used the majority of the year is the 2.5 tog, which is suitable for rooms between 16-20C, however if your room is below 16C we would recommend using a 3.5 tog Grobag. Many parents worry that their baby’s hands and arms are too cold at night, but in fact they are not a good indicator of your child’s temperature. The best way to check to see if your little one is too hot or cold is to feel the back of their neck or tummy. Children are unable to regulate their temperature until they are around 2 years old, when they develop the ability to sweat and shiver. Therefore it’s important to avoid using items that could cause them to overheat, such as hot water bottles or electric blankets. Many parents don’t realise that babies lose their excess body heat through their head, so wearing a hat indoors at anytime can increase the chances of them overheating and isn’t advisable.
