Data are stored in ASCII format, one 
file for each extremes index.

Missing data are set to -999.99

Grids are 3.75 longitude by 2.5 latitude.

There is one grid per year, with a header line indicating the year, 
the element (e.g. FD for Frost Days) and the units.  
There are 53 grids per file, running from 1951 to 2003 inclusive.

Item (1,1) stores the value for the grid box centred at 180W and 90N
Item (96,72) stores the value for the grid box centred at 176.25E and 87.5S
