Throughout the winter months the temperatures can be highly variable across the island, largely related to altitude. Locations at altitude such as Vilaflor and Mount Teide will tend to experience temperatures in the single figures in January and the sight of snow on Mount Teide is not uncommon.

It is worth noting that the southern side of Tenerife is nearly always warmer and so might be the best spot to visit during the coldest month of the year.

The average temperature in Tenerife in January is 21.2 °C with an average low of 15.4 °C.

January is the wettest month of the year in Tenerife with around 41 mm falling during the whole month. This tends to fall very heavily over 5 - 10 days so despite being the wettest month, there are still plenty of warm, dry days to enjoy.

An estimated 73% of the rainfall Tenerife receives falls on the northwestern side of the island which also tends to see cooler temperatures.

Sunshine hours

Throughout January and the whole winter, Tenerife sees 6 hours of sunshine per day and with sea temperatures averaging 20 °C, there is no reason you can't enjoy time on the beach despite being winter in the northern hemisphere.
