This Evening and Tonight:

The wintry showers will continue for many overnight, with snow accumulating in places, especially over hills in the north and west. It will be bitterly cold with gales for many, and perhaps severe gales in the far southwest.

Wednesday:

Windy with showers slowly easing, and snow increasingly restricted to the north. Brightest in the southeast, but rain, hill snow and strong winds will arrive in the west later.

Updated: 15:37 on Tue 16 Jan 2018 GMT

Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Sunday 21 Jan 2018 to Tuesday 30 Jan 2018:

Sunday will start dry, cold and bright at least in the east, with a frosty start. However persistent rain and strong winds will then arrive, perhaps preceded by snow in the north. The start of the new working week will be fairly unsettled with strong winds and some prolonged spells of grey and wet weather, between brighter, showery conditions. Hill snow is possible in the north, although it could be quite mild in the south at times. There remains quite a lot of uncertainty as we head into late January but the UK is likely to see a mixture of short-lived spells of rain and showers, with snow possible for some, followed by periods of colder, brighter weather. Temperatures staying near or below normal.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 31 Jan 2018 to Wednesday 14 Feb 2018:

Through the last of January and into early February there are likely to be some longer spells of cloud and rain, interspersed with periods of colder, brighter, and generally more showery weather. During the unsettled spells, the showers or rain may become wintry, especially in the north and over high ground. During the colder and brighter spells, overnight frost or fog is likely. Temperatures are likely to be around average for the time of year.
