Regional forecast for North East England

Mainly clear and cold overnight, some sunny spells Saturday.

    This Evening and Tonight:

Much of the region will stay dry, although the odd coastal shower can't be ruled out this evening. With some long clear spells overnight, a widespread frost will develop by morning. Minimum Temperature -4 °C.

    Saturday:

Mostly dry but cold after a frosty start, with long sunny spells at first. However, increasing cloud may bring the odd wintry shower to the hills in the afternoon. Maximum Temperature 3 °C.

    Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Sunday less cold after early frost, rain spreading east, then clearing by evening. Monday mainly dry and bright after early frost, Tuesday cloudier and mild with patchy rain or drizzle.

UK forecast for the next 5 days

A cold start to the weekend, but milder next week.

    Today:

Most will be dry with sunny spells, after a frosty, locally icy start. A few wintry showers across northern Scotland and perhaps North Sea coasts at first. Showery rain will move from Northern Ireland in to Wales and western England.

    Tonight:

Generally fairly cloudy across the west, with patchy rain and less cold than recent nights. Some frost again further to the east, and a risk of freezing fog by dawn.

    Sunday:

Frost and fog will slowly lift, then dry and bright for a time. Occasionally heavy rain in the northwest will move southeast, along with milder, but windier conditions.

    Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Turning milder for all parts, though with a good deal of cloud. Fog will likely affect western hills and perhaps develop overnight across parts of the south.

Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Wednesday 20 Dec 2017 to Friday 29 Dec 2017:

In the run up to Christmas it is most probable that the UK should see temperatures return near to or above average for the time of year, with a north-south split developing. In northern parts of the UK the weather is likely to be changeable with strong winds and rain or showers; as well as drier, brighter interludes. Across the south of the UK it will be drier and more settled although probably rather cloudy. Any rain will only be a brief interruption and any breaks in the cloud cover will give foggy or frosty overnight conditions. Over the Christmas period the north-south split looks mostly likely to begin to break down with unsettled, often windy, conditions developing thereafter, with any snow most likely across the north of the UK.

UK Outlook for Saturday 30 Dec 2017 to Saturday 13 Jan 2018:

Through the final days of December, and perhaps the start of January, it is likely to be unsettled and often windy across much of the UK. Temperatures will be near to or below average and snow is likely, at times, especially across northern parts of the country. Through the first half of January a gradual reduction in the frequency of Atlantic westerlies seems most likely, this will be coupled with an increase in the frequency of colder and drier periods, although confidence is low at this stage. Milder, wetter, and windier spells should become more short-lived during this period with the colder and drier spells of weather bringing an increased likelihood of overnight frost and fog, as well as some snow, wintry showers, and below-average temperatures.
