Regional forecast for South West England

Today:

A windy day, with frequent, heavy and blustery showers, merging at times to give some longer spells of rain. Some brighter spells in between, especially later in the day but feeling cold despite higher temperatures than recent days. Maximum Temperature 11 °C.

Tonight:

Staying windy with gales and a squally area of rain through the early evening, perhaps with sleet and hail in places. This will clear to give scattered heavy showers overnight. Minimum Temperature 3 °C.

Thursday:

Sunny spells and frequent, blustery showers on Thursday with gales around exposed coasts and hills. Winds will steadily ease later, but it will remain cold. Maximum Temperature 8 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Sunny for many on Friday, although windy with scattered showers in the far west. Winds easing on Saturday with some showers. Some rain arriving during Sunday. Frosty overnight.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
