Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS)
CMEMS provides near-real time analyses and forecasts, and reanalysis/reprocessed information for recent decades to help users monitor, understand and predict marine environment events.
An operational Copernicus Service, since 2015, Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) is managed by Mercator-Océan, who contract the majority of the service to met or ocean forecasting centres.
The Met Office has a significant role, leading or contributing to a significant part of the CMEMS service. We lead on the provision of modelled reanalysis, analysis and forecast information for the North-West European Shelf (the waters surrounding the UK and neighbouring countries). We also deliver ocean forecasts from our global coupled ocean-atmosphere system, and contribute to the global ocean reanalysis activity. We are also the provider of global sea surface temperature and sea ice gridded observation based analysis products (including reprocessed and near-real time analysis) using our OSTIA system.
