The global average temperature for July 2014 as estimated from the HadCRUT4 data set was 0.55 ± 0.20 °C above the 1961-1990 average. Sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) in the Tropical Pacific were close to or above the long-term average in July, but not so high as to be indicative of an El Niño event. Warmer than average surface waters in the eastern Tropical Pacific overlaid cooler than average subsurface waters from 140 °W to the coast of South America. In contrast, warmer than average waters in May and June penetrated to a greater depth.

During July, the global average air temperature over land was warmer than the long-term average (0.72 ± 0.29 °C). Unusually low monthly average air temperatures were reported in an area centred to the south west of the Great Lakes and around 60-70 °E in northern Eurasia. Unusually high monthly temperatures were reported along the western edge of North America down through Central America and into the Caribbean. Northern Europe and areas from North Africa eastwards to south east Asia were also unusually warm.

SSTs were generally warmer than average in July (0.55 ± 0.08 °C). Areas of unusual warmth were widespread in the Northern Hemisphere. Large areas of the northern Pacific were significantly warmer than average, particularly in the Gulf of Alaska and along the west coast of North and Central America. Large areas of the Indian Ocean and western Tropical Pacific were also unusually warm. The northeast Atlantic between Europe and Greenland was much warmer than average as was the western North Atlantic and the Labrador Sea. There were a few areas of unusually low SSTs: small areas around 30 °N in the North Pacific and some areas in the South Atlantic. Cooler than average waters were also reported in parts of the Southern Ocean.

In the southern hemisphere, the sea ice surrounding Antarctica reached a record extent for July. In the Arctic, sea ice extent was the fourth lowest on record. In each case, the record is the passive microwave satellite record that begins in 1979.
