Current activities

Bruce is a senior scientist working on data assimilation. He works on the processing of surface, radiosonde and aircraft data.  This work has links with the observation section as well as diagnostic studies, verification and boundary layer processes. 

Bruce has recently been involved in the development and implementation of a new humidity control variable and is now working on dust assimilation.

Career background

Bruce joined the Met Office in 1984 and after 15 months running the climate model spent three years looking at the impact of SEASAT scatterometer winds, changes to the North Atlantic observing system and profiler winds on the accuracy of numerical forecasts.

From 1989 to 1997 Bruce worked on observation quality control and processing, including a rewrite of the operational quality control (QC) programs, new observation display programs and a study of pressure errors. With others he developed 'variational quality control' and studied the relationship between various QC methods.

In 1994 Bruce started working on the representation of background error covariances and other aspects of the Met Office's new variational assimilation system. Several innovations were made to improve the covariances before and after the operational implementation of 3D-Var.

From 2002 to 2007 Bruce worked in the seasonal forecasting group, mainly on aspects of ocean data assimilation. Bruce produced an improved quality control system for sub-surface ocean data and processed over 50 years worth of observations, subsequently used by other groups around the world. 

Bruce returned to NWP in 2007 and introduced the global assimilation of surface temperature, humidity and wind in 2008 with a clear benefit for short range surface temperature and humidity forecasts. Late in 2009 Bruce visited ECMWF for three weeks to collaborate on assimilation of surface data. A study of the quality of ship and buoy reports led to a number of improvements in 2010. 

He was also heavily involved in developing a nonlinear humidity transform which gave benefit in global and regional models and became operational in 2011.
