Paul Newell

Paul is a statistician in the Energy Science team, analysing weather and climate data to enable decision-making in the face of weather and climate effects.

Current activities

Paul is currently working on applications of extreme value analysis, combining historical observations with climate model simulations.

In the past, Paul has carried out other studies for clients in the energy and infrastructure sectors, including:

  • Extreme value analysis for nuclear and water industry clients
  • Wind and solar radiation climatology for the renewable energy sector
  • Blending solar radiation datasets from multiple sources
  • Weather-related faults analysis – including wind, rain, and lightning – for electricity network operators/li>

Career background

Paul joined the Met Office in January 2014, after spending six years as a medical statistician at Plymouth University.

Paul has a BSc (Hons) in Mathematical Science from the Open University and an MSc in Statistics from the University of Sheffield.

External recognition

Paul is a GradStat member of the Royal Statistical Society.
