Dr Vikki Thompson
Vikki works on climate dynamics with a focus on China and Europe
Areas of expertise
- Climate extremes
- Monthly to decadal climate variability
- Decadal climate prediction
Vikki works on the Climate Science for Service Partnership China project as part of a group researching global climate dynamics. She works with the Met Office Decadal Prediction System, Met Office decadal prediction system: DePreSys. Currently Vikki is working on identifying unprecedented extreme events in model runs and investigating the climate dynamics that could cause them.
Vikki joined the Met Office Hadley Centre in 2015 as a member of the Monthly to Decadal Prediction group. Prior to that she completed a PhD in Meteorology at Reading University supervised by Prof Rowan Sutton. Her PhD investigated climate change during the twentieth century focusing on the early twentieth century warming from 1910 to 1940. Vikki did a Physics and Earth Science BSc at Durham University followed by an Oceanography MSc at the University of Southampton.
