Weather challenges for Sailing:
- Wind and gusts of wind can be extremely dangerous if unanticipated as they have the ability to capsize a boat and put all crew members in danger.
- Wave height is highly correlated with wind speed. Higher waves put sail boats in risk of capsizing which puts crews in high levels of danger.
- Lack of wind can cause postponement of sailing races if they fall below the minimum knot limit.
- Lightning can become dangerous out at sea as sailing masts are often the tallest metal structure in the area, putting the sail boat in danger of being struck.
- Fog causes visibility problems for crew members which can become dangerous, especially in races when sea traffic is busy.

Location-specific Threshold Forecasts
Threshold forecasts highlight when you should pay most attention to the weather using bespoke parameters and the thresholds that affect you. These forecasts can go out many days ahead and guidance can also give you recommendations to what to do when the significant weather hits your location.
Examples of the variables available include: wind Speed, visibility and the probability of lightning (amongst others).
For very weather sensitive events that require constant on site monitoring and support, the Met Office can supply world leading forecasters for your event to provide the advice and guidance for crucial health, safety and operational decisions.
Nested modelling allows you to understand more localised weather conditions at high resolution. The nested model can generate resolutions to as detailed as one-hundred meters. The nested model is beneficial in situations of complexity, such as those of high winds and wave height, as it allows you to identify hidden crosswinds and weather changes that might not have been visible in a ‘standard’ model, aiding race and sail strategy.
