The project was completed in January 2018. Its rollout was split into four separate phases.
Phase 1 Software installation
Cyclops-D3 was rolled-out to the whole network during winter 2010-2011.
Phase 2 Resilience/doppler upgrade
A new transmitter with doppler capability was installed at each radar. The full network was upgraded between December 2011 and December 2012.
Phase 3 Infrastructure upgrade
This phase addressed the health and safety requirements to fit stairs to the top of the tower at all sites and to carry out structural repairs where needed. To address these requirements each site was made non-operational for between six to eight weeks. The first tower upgrade took place in 2012.
Phases three and four were combined to reduce the total down time of each radar.
Phase 4 Dual polarisation/resilience upgrade
This involved the installation of a new dual channel receiver, dual polarisation antenna and high specification radome. Each radar was taken out of service for three to four weeks for this work to take place. Once installed the full radar system was then performance tested for eight weeks at each site prior to it being returned to operational status.
