Aviation Green Recovery

Using high resolution winds to reduce CO2 in flights

Watch our video to learn how high resolution winds can be incorporated into innovative technology to reduce the amount of CO2 emitted during a flight.

Choosing the best winds to optimise an aircraft’s flight path means that less fuel is burned making the flight greener, timelier and more cost efficient.

We are currently developing the latest 4D trajectory API to enable access to high resolution weather data and incorporate it into your systems and software. Confidently plan ahead with medium range forecasts

Inform your risk-based decisions by accessing a long-range forecasting service that provides alternative views of weather conditions up to 3 months ahead. Clearly identify changes and see how weather patterns will impact on climatology for different regions.

Get climate ready – industry climate consultancy services

To what extent could heavier rainfall episodes increase surface water flooding on an airport runway causing potential delays for passengers? How might the most popular tourist destinations change as temperatures increase?

Build confidence with regulators and investors by understanding the weather and climate related hazards and opportunities impacting your business. Knowledge of these hazards now can make you more resilient to climate change and at the same time help you to take advantage of emerging opportunities.  See one example of how we supported Egis and Eurocontrol with understanding some of the anticipated impacts of climate change in the 'European climate change risks study'

Work with our climate consultancy experts to receive actionable advice to your questions about climate change risk, including adaptation reporting for disclosures such as TCFD (Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures) and ARP (Adaptation Reporting Power).

Or take advantage of our climate change training to increase expertise in your own team. Harness the wealth of freely available climate information to enable more confident and evidence-based decision making around how to prepare your business for a changing climate.

Improving our WAFS capabilities – WAFS 2023

The Met Office and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) are working to develop and futureproof the World Area Forecast System (WAFS). The work involves updating our Regulated data services for the benefit of the aviation industry.

We will enhance our wind and temperature data to help to determine more efficient flight paths for aircraft and reduce fuel consumption and to anticipate or avoid hazards like turbulence or cumulonimbus clouds.

Find out more about WAFS 2023, including the latest releases.
