This is the average number of seconds between one wave and the next, 1-2 miles out to sea. A long wave period (more than 10 seconds) means the waves at the beach may be more powerful. Lifeguards can give you advice on waves if you’re planning to go into the water.

The arrow shows the average direction of the waves 1-2 miles out to sea. It indicates how sheltered the beach will be from these waves. If the arrow points towards land, most of the waves’ power will reach the beach. If the arrow is parallel to or pointing away from land, the wave height is likely to be lower on the beach than it is offshore.

Sunshine and showers Friday. Rather cold, with overnight frosts.
This Evening and Tonight:
Cloud largely clearing southwards during the evening, leaving much of the region dry but cold overnight, with a frost for many. A little less cold in coastal districts, with one or two showers here. Local fog patches also possible. Minimum temperature -4 °C.
Friday:
A cold start, perhaps fine in the west at first but becoming increasingly showery generally, with sharp showers more widely into the afternoon, perhaps locally thundery. Drier but frosty overnight. Maximum temperature 12 °C.
Outlook for Saturday to Monday:
An unsettled period, with sunshine and showers but also longer spells of rain, with Sunday perhaps wettest. Temperatures trending upwards to near average.

The period is likely to start with areas of organised rain and/or showers in the west, and largely dry conditions in the east although a scattering of showers developing by day. As the week progresses thes more organised areas of rain and showers are likely to slide southeast to affect southern parts of the UK, with drier weather in northern, especially northwestern UK Winds will gradually turn from southerly to easterly, with a chance of rain or even thundery showers for a time in the east and southeast. Temperatures likely to trend upwards, with the chance of a warm to very warm spell in some southern and eastern parts, before conditions probably turn gradually drier, cooler and more settled from the west towards the end of the period.

In this period, the chances of unsettled weather are slightly less than usual in the north and about the same as usual further south. Therefore, some spells of wetter weather are likely for all, but perhaps especially southern areas with the driest conditions probably further north. Temperatures probably near average though with some cooler interludes possible. Also worth noting that average temperatures themselves rise by around 1C per week at this time of year.
