Atmosphere
The atmosphere is a layer of gases surrounding our planet, kept in place by its own weight under gravity.
Most of our weather takes place in the lower layer of the atmosphere, the first 16 km (about 9 km at the poles), known as the troposphere. The layer above the troposphere is called the stratosphere, and then we have the mesosphere and finally the thermosphere, which extends up to 1000 km above the earth’s surface.
Many large and small-scale processes go on in the atmosphere which are fundamental to the weather we see on a daily basis.
