When is the best time to go to Dubrovnik?

For sunshine seekers, the best months to visit Dubrovnik are May to August, when rainfall is at its lowest. For those who like to take a dip in the sea, during these months the temperature of the Adriatic is often in the low twenties Celsius, a good deal warmer than we ever see around the UK!

If you want to avoid the summer heat and the crowds of the peak tourist season, autumn and spring are cool with the sea still warm enough to swim, and are a perfect time to explore winding streets and baroque architecture of the old city.

Spring

The start of spring can see periods of unsettled and wet weather, and can be breezy at times as the southeasterly wind of the sirocco blows along the Adriatic coast. The sirocco is usually accompanied by rain and increased humidity, but is often followed by brighter and fresher northwesterly winds.

Summer

June, July and August are the warmest and sunniest months, with afternoon temperatures commonly reaching 29 Celsius. The sirocco wind rarely blows, so these months also have lower humidity levels and the lowest rainfall.

With the long summer days, sunshine averages between 10 and 11 hours, and warm evenings are perfect for eating alfresco or strolling along the city walls.

Dubrovnik is situated right on the coast, and this means the heat of summer is often alleviated by gentle sea breezes. These in turn can occasionally trigger evening thunderstorms over the inland mountains.

Autumn

As the day length begins to shorten, there are fewer tourists in the city and yet many attractions remain open. The days are still warm with temperatures in September averaging in the mid 20’s, dropping to around 17 °C by November.

Autumn sees the return of the sirocco wind bringing with it occasional spells of rain accompanied by higher humidity. September’s average rainfall is 102mm, comparing with Augusts average of only 37mm, and by November the average rainfall is 187mm.

Winter

These are the cloudiest months and also the wettest, with December rainfall averaging at 185mm. It's not a complete washout though, with occasional spells of the strong northeasterly Bora wind bringing dry, and beautifully clear but colder weather.  Daytime temperatures still average out in double figures, and overnight frosts are extremely unusual. These are the quietest months tourist wise, and you may wish to use Dubrovnik as a base for exploring along the coast, or perhaps inland to the snowy winter mountains.

Dubrovnik tourist information

Dubrovnik is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is renowned for its 16th century old town which is car free.  It is encircled by high medieval city walls which stretch for almost 2km, and you can walk all the way around them.  Most of the top attractions are found within the old town, with its stunning architecture, beautiful palaces and fortresses, and its network of narrow alleys which house many cafes and restaurants.

You may well recognise parts of the old city of Dubrovnik from the popular television series Game of Thrones, and it was also used as an outside location for the Star Wars film The Last Jedi. Tours are available throughout the tourist season for those who wish visit these locations.

Even during the winter months there are things to do, and the annual Dubrovnik Winter Festival sees advent stalls and holiday lights within the old town. There is also the Dubrovnik Carnival in early February, more properly known as the Festival of St Blaise, which has been a special holiday for the City of Dubrovnik since the year 972.
