When is the best time to visit Sardinia?

The summer months offer the hottest and driest weather, with very little rainfall and a lot of unbroken sunshine. If the hustle and bustle of the peak holiday season is too much, then the end of spring and start of autumn may be a better time to visit. During the winter, Sardinia is much quieter and some of the restaurants or hotels may be closed out of season. There is more rain and cloud on average than other times of the year, the temperatures stay mild and there are still good spells of sunshine.

Spring

Through March, April and May, the weather becomes warmer, with average highs of 17.5 Celsius in March, increasing to 24.3 Celsius in May, although these are also some of the windier months. There is wet weather from time to time, with April seeing more rain than March or May.

Summer

The summer months see much less rainfall than the rest of the year, with only 6mm on average in June, 3mm in July, and 4mm in August. The other months usually get 19 to 69mm. The peak of the temperatures is in August, with 32 Celsius the daily average, coinciding with the peak in tourism. However, June and July also see mainly cloud-free skies and sizzling summer heat.

Autumn

The summer warmth lingers into September, with average highs of 28 Celsius. However, through October and November the temperatures drop off, with average highs of 19.1 Celsius in November; still balmy compared to this time of year in the UK. November is also the wettest month of the year, usually seeing around 69mm of rain.

Winter

During the winter months, sunshine amounts are at their lowest and there is rain from time to time. However, temperatures are still fairly mild, with the coldest month of January still seeing daily average highs of 14.6 Celsius. This season offers the most affordable time to visit, and a more ‘local’ feel to holidaying on this culturally rich Island.

Sardinia tourist information

The scorching sunshine, turquoise waters and sandy beaches are not the only reason for visiting this stunning gem of the Mediterranean. There is also the draw of the spectacular mountainous interior for those who enjoy getting out and about; and the historical towns, archaeological sites and stone towers offer an interesting look back into the past. Other cultural highlights include the lively nightlife in the capital of Cagliari, and the stunning Emerald coast (Costa Smeralda); home to super-yachts of the rich and famous.
